Film Industry: BBFC film regulation

 1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government? This history of the BBFC page may help.

It is an independent, non-governmental body funded through charged fees. This means film distributors have always paid a fee to have their works rated and it is responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works

2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.

All classification decisions are based on the BBFC’s published and regularly updated Guidelines. The Guidelines are the product of extensive public consultation, research and the accumulated experience of the BBFC over many years. They reflect current views on film, DVD and video game regulation.

3) Read this BBFC section on landmark decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?

The 12A rating resulted in much press coverage and complaints from members of the public, who thought the violence was too strong to be contained at that category.I disagree with the certificate as although the violent scenes may not be shown but they are very clear and extreme for a 12 year old to watch at least a 13 year old with a parent as well as you can imagine what has happened to the person when the violent act occur even if they dont directly show the aftermath.

4) What are the guidelines for a 12A certificate - Blinded By The Light's cinema certificate (it was rated 12 for its home video release)?

The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema.

5) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Blinded By The Light and explain why it was given a 12A certificate for cinema release.

So it had moderate violence but it did not dwell on detail. It didn't have much swear words it did have a bit of discrimination but not too aggressive not much sexual acts as well just a causal relationship. It is reasonable to have this rating.
