Coursework: Summer Project 2024

 1) Research: music videos

Music Video 1: Narrative
This song we can apply Todorov's theory  as well as Propp's theory as the equilibrium is that the artist Taylor as the girl who met the guy which can be the hero and she can be the princess later on they liked each other and got close however the villain which is the new girl with brunette hair who took away the guy from her and separated both of them this is now the dis equilibrium however finally the resolution which was at the end which seems like to be an event like prom where they met again and finally got together as the guy left and ignored the new girl and focused on Taylor his original real love partner where they expose the papers to each other that they wrote but was not able to reveal. we can apply Binary oppositions as the two girls are very opposite and juxtaposed in terms of looks and characters.

Music Video 2:  Camerawork (shots, angles, movement)
I found this music video very interesting and links with this as it mostly and nearly ticks off every single camera shot and angle as we can see in the first few seconds the low angle camera shot of the artist to show the power and strength and the focus on him even before the audio begins. the handheld camera work as if he is walking and holding the camera himself. The close-ups on his face and the speed of the car is intentionally attracting to the audience. The juxtaposition of the angles and eye catching shift of  camera pace and quick movement from the long to extreme close up shots.

Music Video 3: Mise-en-scene
Save your tears
the lighting was following the artist and focusing on him with low key lighting and back lighting as if the spotlight is following him . the setting is like a formal event as we can see he is wearing a very formal suit and clothing to match the venue. The back lighting on the female cheater to emphasises her presence and focus on her the hard lighting to focus on the weekend. also the backlighting as he has the gun to his head to create excitement and suspense.

Music Video 4: Editing
Feather - Sabrina
Many different jump cuts and fast paced editing as well as many different scenes and settings from out fire and indoor as well as where there was like black flashes between the different scenes as well as fast pace with zooming in and out with various locations to keep the audience engaged there is slow and fast camera shots and the juxtaposition of close up shots and long shots.

Music Video 5: Conventions
Long way to go
This music video features many conventions like narrative, moment and Character as well as lighting like soft and hard lighting. There is camera shots like fish eye lense  to create engagement  without the audience. There is a performance element as she is standing with back dancers as they are all dancing with different camera angles.

Music Video 6: Visual effects, intertextuality or product placement
This music video gives a big intertextuality of the popular , rock singer and dominant performers Elvis Presley and it also give us intertextuality of his biographical movies that has been made for him as well as the era of 1950s-1970s. It also has good editing and a filter as if its filmed in the same era as elvis as well as effects and editing as if we are watching the music video from the tv. Moreover it also mocks real life videos of Elvis Presley and the artist pretends to be him in a black and white filter singing with a guitar and an old microphone the women could be implying to be high wife but also the lookalike of Marilyn Monroe so this could also be an intertextual reference.

2) Planning: music video treatment

Original :Miley Cyrus - Flowers (Official Video)
New Artist: Leyla Everton/ Hadid - Flowers (Official Video)

I am going to have one of my friends she will be the main character as well as another friend to be a side character However i am going to have multiple  scenes throughout my music video where the main character would be seen living her life to the fullest , as she continues to enjoy her life without a partner and putting herself first.  Then there will be scenes showing how she is reconnecting with her friend.
It is to express an ex-lover's acceptance of being independent after no longer feeling the need to rely on someone else to be complete.

3)

I want to contradict the typical stereotypes of teenage girls in media that depict them as having all of their problems due to past relationships with men. I want to show that girls can be independent and  powerful  and don’t have to rely on anyone.
I want to add  like a vintage and old money vibes  in terms of clothing, props and costume  I may add  filters in terms of editing  to match the vibe of some scenes.  Also  a mix  with modern, casual clothing  and streetwear and to  be able to match the original song genre.  Also for the make up it may be light but visible make-up to match the natural look.  Uses and Gratifications include Personal identity/ relationships i want the young girls to feel the freedom that they should have  and move on and make the right decisions as well as stand by the actor and connect with her.  Diversion: i want them to get entertained and engage with the music video as well as the lyrics of the song.  Surveillance: i want to make sure that the message is also passed through the song clearly and to help out young women as well as challenge stereotypes of weak  immature girls.
