Statement of Intent feedback and learner response

Comments for AQA:

This is a clear statement of intent that offers a good concept that matches the music video / music magazine brief. It targets the specified audience appropriately and offers a range of creative ideas for media language use.

Media language elements are a particular strength although perhaps lacking a focus on connotations in places which could push this into the top two levels. Narrative isn’t entirely clear.

Representation is weaker and keeps this from the top levels. Some theory is applied but not explained sufficiently and representation analysis doesn’t really move beyond gender stereotypes.

Audience is addressed impressively with audience pleasures and engagement a particular strength.

Digital convergence is touched on towards the end and some industry context is included. More on the industry side could push this towards the top levels.

Print side of brief is mentioned briefly at the beginning but not expanded on which also keeps this in the lower levels.

Feedback:

This is not far from the top levels and just needs a few extra elements for a 7-10 mark.

Think about layout for your statement – perhaps consider some additional subheadings / bullet points in places. This may help save you words in the word count too. The key element of statements of intent is ‘how’ or ‘why’. What are you trying to communicate to the audience? You mention plenty of fantastic creative ideas so just make sure you’ve got a ‘why’ or a connotation that will be communicated with them.

Representation is a weaker area – you do bring in some theory but you need to justify it and explain it in more detail. Perhaps pick one or two theories and focus on those in more detail?

Print brief is mentioned at the beginning but not returned to. This is not a major issue as we haven’t covered it yet – go back to this in January to add specific details when you have done the print research and planning tasks.

Industries is mentioned but perhaps look at this again when you have more detail for the print brief and then you can discuss links/consumption between the two products.

Next steps:

Copy and paste this feedback to your Media 2 coursework blog with the title ‘Statement of Intent feedback and learner response’.

As your learner response, pick out the three improvements/changes you need to make to your Statement of Intent before producing a final draft.

Re-draft your statement of intent using Microsoft Word / Google Docs – you may wish to do this after Christmas when we have completed research and planning for the print element of the brief.

 Improvements:

- Representation section change the theorists I am changing Dyer for Gauntlet gender and fluidity and taking out Stuart Hall

- Magazine name and more about its industry and who will it be published by.

- I will add subheading and maybe take out the key things and put them into bullet points.
